Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Builds the Psychological Flexibility That Sobriety Requires

ACT does not aim to eliminate difficult thoughts or feelings. It teaches clients to hold them differently, so they stop driving behavior. At Top of the World Ranch, ACT is integrated into the clinical program as a complement to trauma-focused treatment and other evidence-based modalities.

ACT helps clients accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. This shift builds the psychological flexibility that supports lasting recovery.

What ACT Does

If Fighting Your Feelings Has Only Made Them Louder, ACT Was Built for That

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an evidence-based behavioral therapy that focuses on psychological flexibility: the ability to be present with difficult internal experiences without being controlled by them. Rather than working to reduce or eliminate anxious thoughts, depressive patterns, or cravings, ACT helps clients develop a different relationship with those experiences.

The core of ACT involves six interconnected processes: cognitive defusion, acceptance, contact with the present moment, the observing self, values clarification, and committed action. Together they build the capacity to act in alignment with what matters most to a person even when internal experience is uncomfortable or difficult.

In addiction treatment, this is particularly relevant. Cravings, triggers, shame, and the discomfort of early sobriety are experiences that many clients have spent years avoiding through substance use. ACT provides a framework for engaging with those experiences without requiring substances to make them manageable.

ACT at Top of the World Ranch is delivered by trained clinicians as part of the individual and group therapy components of treatment. It works alongside EMDR, CBT, DBT, and the holistic programming that forms the complete treatment model here.
