PTSD and Addiction Are Not Two Separate Problems

Post-traumatic stress and substance use disorder almost always occur together for a reason. Top of the World Ranch treats both at the same time, with EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy built into every client’s program from day one.

PTSD and addiction are deeply connected for many people. Lasting recovery requires treating the trauma underneath the substance use, not just the addiction alone.

Who This Is For

Why Trauma and Addiction Are So Often the Same Story

Post-traumatic stress disorder changes how the nervous system processes threat, memory, and emotion. The hypervigilance, intrusive memories, emotional numbing, and sleep disruption of PTSD are exhausting to live with. Substances provide temporary relief from a nervous system that will not stand down.
This is why treating addiction without treating PTSD has such a poor success rate. The trauma is still there when the substance is removed. The nervous system is still dysregulated. The person has lost the only tool that was managing the symptoms.
EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy were developed specifically to process traumatic memory and reduce its hold on the nervous system. They are not add-ons at Top of the World Ranch. They are core components of every client’s treatment from the beginning.

How We Treat It

Integrated PTSD Treatment for Trauma and Nervous System Recovery

PTSD treatment at Top of the World Ranch is built into the primary addiction treatment program. Every client receives EMDR or ART. Individual trauma-focused therapy, group programming, and the full holistic model including yoga, qigong, meditation, Native American ceremonies, and the natural environment of 315 private acres provide daily support for nervous system recovery.

EMDR & ART for PTSD Recovery

Every client receives trauma-focused care designed to address PTSD and nervous system dysregulation.

Structured Clinical Programming

Clients participate in therapy, trauma processing, and recovery-focused group sessions.

Yoga, Meditation & Qigong

Holistic therapies help regulate stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm throughout treatment.

Connection Beyond Traditional Therapy

The ranch environment and Native American ceremonies support grounding, reflection, and recovery.

Land and Space as Part of Nervous System Recovery

The nervous system recovering from PTSD requires safety, space, and predictability. The natural environment at Top of the World Ranch provides all three. On 315 private acres of Idaho mountain terrain, there is room to move, to breathe, and to step outside the clinical setting into an environment that is expansive rather than confined. Research on nature exposure and nervous system regulation consistently shows reductions in threat response, cortisol, and hyperarousal. For clients in PTSD treatment, daily access to that environment is part of the clinical program.
